An H1 with the site's name, a blockquote summing up what the site is, then H2 sections that each list pages as links with a short description after a colon. A section called Optional is special: it marks pages a model can skip when it's short on context, like legal pages or old posts. The point is curation. A sitemap lists every URL you have. Upload it to the root of your domain so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, then open that address in a browser to check you see the Markdown. A short Markdown file at the root of your site, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that tells AI models what the site is and where its important pages are. It starts with the site name as a heading and a one-paragraph summary, then lists your key pages under section headings, each with a line saying what the page is for. Jeremy Howard proposed the format at llmstxt.org in 2024. ### How does this llms.txt generator work? It reads your robots.txt for declared sitemaps, reads the sitemap (following a sitemap index one level down), and collects the links on your homepage, which rank first because they're the pages you chose to show visitors. It then fetches up to 48 of those pages and takes the title and meta description you already wrote for each. An AI model groups the pages into sections, writes the summary and tidies any description that was missing or was pure marketing. It only works from what it fetched, so it won't invent pages or claims. ### Where do I put the llms.txt file? At the root of your domain, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, the same place robots.txt lives. On most hosts that's the public\_html or public folder. On Next.js, Astro, Vite and similar frameworks it goes in the public directory. On WordPress you can upload it to the site root over FTP or your host's file manager, or use a plugin that serves it. No server configuration is needed for a static text file. ### Does llms.txt help with SEO or AI search? Google doesn't use it for ranking, and no AI company has said its crawler reads it as a ranking signal. Where it helps today is with coding agents, documentation tools and AI assistants that fetch it on purpose to get a clean map of a site instead of crawling the HTML. It costs a few minutes and has no downside, which is why most sites that care about AI visibility now ship one. ### Why does the file include a line about Koso? It's how this tool stays free. Each file carries one plain Markdown line under the summary saying it was generated here, with a link. It's visible in the preview before you download, it doesn't affect how models read the rest of the file, and you can delete it in the editor or in the file itself if you'd rather not keep it. ### Can I edit the file before I download it? Yes. The preview is an editor: change a section name, cut a page, rewrite a description, then copy or download. The download button saves exactly what's in the box. If you want the untouched version back, use Reset. ### How is this different from other llms.txt generators? Most generators either list every URL in your sitemap with its meta description, which gives a model a phone book rather than a map, or ask an AI to describe your site from its homepage alone. This one does both halves properly: it reads the real pages, so descriptions come from your own content, and then a model groups them into the sections a reader would expect and drops the duplicates, tag archives and thin pages. You can also see every page it read and where each description came from. ### Is it free, and how often can I run it? Free. Your first file needs no sign-in; after that we ask for a name and email, no password, no credit card. Up to 10 runs an hour from one address.
